Gray Line Munich insider tips

Things to do in Munich
1. Visit the Marienplatz

In order to get the most out of your Munich experience, start with a visit to the Marienplatz — the scenic heart of Munich. The square has been the center of the city since 1158 and is surrounded by Gothic architecture. It is home to the famous Glockenspiel clock, set in the wall of the Rathaus, which is played every day at 11 am, 12 pm, and 5 pm and tells stories from the city's history. Marienplatz also holds Munich’s world-famous Christmas market.

2. Explore the Zugspitze

Zugspitze is the highest point in the German Alps, located in the Wetterstein Mountains. A visit will allow you to gain a full experience of the beauty of the German Alps. If you wish to see the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, you may opt to take a cable car or a cog railway up to the summit at 9,718 feet. At Zugspitze, you can combine the beauty of the Alps with an adventurous activity, and see as far as Austria and Italy. There are several hiking trails, an observation deck, and even an ice palace to explore at the top.

3. Take a tour of the Hofbräuhaus

As the oldest and most famous beer hall in the world, a visit to the Hofbräuhaus is a must-do while in Munich. It is infamous for being the location of some of Hitler’s early speeches, but other regular patrons included Mozart, Lenin, and Louis Armstrong. You can take a tour to learn about the history of beer-making in Munich, and, of course, to taste some delicious Hofbräu beer.

4. Explore the Englischer Garten

Taking a walk through the huge Englischer Garten in the center of Munich is a great way to escape the crowds when you need a moment of tranquility. Opened in 1780, it was originally to provide work for soldiers in peacetime. A Chinese Tower, a Japanese teahouse and a beer garden can be found in this rather large park. Grab a beer and pretzel while you are there, or surf on the artificial streams.

5. Visit the Nymphenburg Palace

If you're interested in history and architecture, you can explore the Nymphenburg Palace. This beautiful palace was built for the ruling family of Bavaria and is surrounded by well-kept manicured gardens. Indoors, you can tour the opulent state rooms and see a collection of porcelain that was made in the palace's own factory. This is a great option for history buffs and lovers of art.

6. Take a tour of the Romantic Road

One of the best ways to see the rolling German countryside is by taking a tour of the Romantic Road. Start in Munich and head to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, two picturesque towns that are filled with history and charm. Rothenburg is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and its charming town square. Finally, you can finish in Harburg, a historical town on the banks of the River Danube, with its own medieval castle and beautiful half-timbered houses.

7. Take a bike tour

Why not travel in style? A bike tour is a wonderful way to see Munich — you can see so much more in a short period of time and get some exercise. You will visit the famous Eisbachwelle and the Olympic Park, for a unique perspective on the city.

Things to do in Munich
8. Climb the St. Peter's Church

If you're not afraid of heights and want a great view of the city, I recommend climbing the spire of St. Peter's Church. A church has stood on this location since before records began and St. Peter's was built in 1368 following a fire. The church's 299-foot tower offers an excellent view of the city and a location for the best panoramic photos.

Things to do in Munich
9. Enjoy the street art

Munich is home to some amazing street artists. The always-changing canvas on the walls of the city adds a spot of color to the vibrant city. You'll find the graffiti tunnel just a short walk from the Ostbahnhof, where you can spend hours exploring and admiring the incredible artwork.

Things to do in Munich
10. Take a day trip

Take a day trip to one of the towns, villages and castles that surround Munich. There are many tranquil locations within a short train ride of Munich, such as Dachau, Füssen, Salzburg, Nuremberg, and many more. The countryside is filled with the castles of the Bavarian kings that date back to medieval times.

What our customers are saying about Munich

Well-organized tour! This is the best way to visit Neuschwanstein Castle with the added bonus of Linderhof Castle and the quaint little town of Oberammergau. If everyone in the tour group sticks to the time schedule at all the stops, the tour will visit all 3 places and return to...

Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Royal Castle and Oberammergau Tour from Munich - Skip-the-line

I highly recommend using Gray Line Tours and this trip to Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Palace and Oberammerqau. Both Linderhof and Neuschwanstein were spectacular. The walk up to Neusch was quite a hike. Shuttles were not running, so we had to walk the entire path. It's paved, ...

Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Royal Castle and Oberammergau Tour from Munich - Skip-the-line

The tour was well organized and on time. Johnny, our guide, was courteous and knowledgeable. Due to timing, we did not stop at Oberammergau, which was OK with us as it gave us more time. We did drive through it and could enjoy its charm from the comfort of the bus. Also, due to w...
