After your hotel pickup from Santiago, relax on the 30-minute drive south of the city to Concha y Toro winery, located in the Maipo Valley winemaking region.
As you pass through the grand entrance, marvel at the beautifully landscaped grounds of the winery, which was founded in 1883. Meet your winery guide and group, and start your winery tour in the gardens next to Casona, the former summer home of the Concha y Toro family. Then, head into the old Pirque vineyards to learn about the winery’s techniques for growing and maintaining the vines. Hear about the master vineyard keepers who keep a close watch on the vines all year long, and then listen to stories about the winery’s long history as you enjoy the wonderful view of the Maipo Valley from the winery terrace. Next, enjoy a tasting of Casillero del Diablo, a carmenere varietal (a grape originally from Bordeaux) that’s one of the best-known Chilean wines in the world, and then descend into the winery’s underground cellar, also called Casillero del Diablo (the Devil’s Cellar). Hear the fascinating tale about Concha y Toro’s founder, Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro, who told the public back in the late 1800s that the devil lived in the cellar to keep them away from his private collection of wine. Thus, the legend of Casillero del Diablo was born. End your tour at the wine bar for a wine tasting. If you select the wine-only option, sample two wines from the flagship Casillero del Diablo label. Or, select the wine-and-cheese pairing option, which includes four wines from Marques de Casa Concha, a premium label, accompanied by gourmet cheese.
Before heading back to Santiago, browse the wine shop for books, souvenirs and, of course, bottles of wine to take home.
