Just a few kilometres south of the splendid city of Naples, a marvellous peninsula bends towards the Mediterranean nuances of the Italian sea: the Amalfi Coast is such a charming and evocative place that it has been chosen by UNESCO as one of the most superlative examples of the majesty and luxury of Italian landscapes.
Could we at Gray Line I Love Rome not think of all those who would love to discover this wonderful region with one of our most famous Day Trips?
This is a region traditionally deeply connected to its sea, verdant landscapes and centuries-long history. Did you know that the beautiful Amalfi was one of the four Maritime Republics of Italy, together with Genoa, Pisa and Venice?
Maritime Republics were independent city-states in Italy - during the Middle Ages – that had naval supremacy over a vast territory; they each had their own impressive fleet of ships for their protection, but also for large-scale trade networks across the Mediterranean basin.
They were the bridge that connected the old European continent to the Middle East, to Africa and Asia, not only for trade purposes, but also cultural and artistic.
During the golden years of the international jet set, in the 1960s, the Amalfi Coast was the favourite retreat for the most important international political, movies and show-biz personalities: from Jaqueline Kennedy to the Agnelli family, from Sophia Loren and Greta Garbo to Rudolf Nureyev.
Among the most popular and visited destinations are Amalfi and Positano, included in this activity, but also Ravello, Procida and the spectacular Sorrento, that are definitely worth a few days’ trip.
If you wish to become an expert of the region, ask our staff for all the other experiences: whether it is a day trip or a multi-day excursion, we guarantee you it will be unforgettable!
This tour will allow you the chance to visit two of the most famous and popular villages of the Amalfi Coast: Amalfi and Positano. You will join a group of no more than 15 people, when meeting with your tour leader at the Roma Termini railway station to leave for Salerno onboard the high-speed train included in the package.
Once in Salerno, you will reach Amalfi by ferryboat, which is truly the best way to explore the Coast and get the best possible view of the hills plunging into the sea, the coloured little houses and the majestic nature that surrounds you: you’ll feel like a movie star!
Amalfi will be the first destination you reach: nestled in a ravine surrounded by stunning cliffs, it was known as the Duchy of Amalfi during the Middle Ages. Here you will have free time to explore the town, its public squares, shops and the Cathedral on your own.
After visiting Amalfi, you will take the ferry back to Positano to discover all its charm and elegance: you will feel as if you ended up in a painting! Its coloured buildings, shops and sandy beaches will put a spell on you: visit the Marina Grande beach, just where the town meets the sea, or stroll around Fornillo or Arienzo beaches.
You will spend about two and a half hours in Positano before taking your ferry back to Salerno and heading for the railway station to take your high-speed train back to Rome, where you will be at around 08:30 PM.
