The Aquarium of the Bay at PIER 39 facility boasts 300 feet of crystal clear acrylic tunnels holding 700,000 gallons of carefully maintained bay water that sustains approximately 20,000 animals, from octopi to eight-foot, native, seven-gill sharks. Visitors are treated to mesmerizing walls of jellyfish and a chance to touch bat rays, skates and “splash zone" animals. In its fifteen year history, over seven million guests, including more than 100,000 school children, have visited San Francisco’s spectacular Aquarium of the Bay.
Your Aquarium of the Bay exploration begins in Discover the Bay, featuring the distinctive ecosystems that support an incredibly wide variety of marine life. In eight exhibits featuring over a thousand aquatic animals, you will learn about the creatures that make their homes in the Bay.
Exhibit highlights include:
“Beauties of the Bay”: visit San Francisco Bay’s most colorful animals, including the bright orange Garibaldi (the California State Marine Fish), green Moray Eels and rockfish of varying colors, in the first exhibit on the right.
River Otters
Swirling school of anchovies – did you know that lateral lines on anchovies’ bodies serve as sensory organs? This enables the animals to sense where the school is moving, to help stick together and avoid predators.
“Bay Babies” from newly hatched Skates to juvenile perch and other fishes, explore underwater newborns. San Francisco Bay is a nursery ground to many fish species.

I originally booked the Grand City Tour. However, the tour was overbooked by 1 person and I volunteered to get off and go on another tour. Gray Line put me on the City & Sausalito tour instead, gave me a free pass for the Sausalito ferry, gave me $20 back, and offered to buy me a cup of coffee from the cafe next door while waiting. When the next tour was ready one of the employees walked me over and let me on the bus first. I was very pleased with how I was treated.Douglas was the tour guide and he was simply awesome. He looked and sounded a bit like Bill Murray and was just as funny. He was incredibly knowledgeable of the city and its history. We followed him to Fish And Chips for lunch in Sausalito and it was good. I liked him enough I gave him the $20 as a tip for the tour.I rode the ferry back to Fisherman's Wharf. The views leaving Sausalito, passing the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and returning to the city were beautiful. I was never able to take the Grand City Tour but I thoroughly enjoyed the City & Sausalito tour and would highly recommend it to others. If you're lucky enough to have Doug as your guide then enjoy the ride.

Making the online booking was ok. However they don't offer the 20% discount to Bay Area residents though.
