This was a highlight of my 4 days in Austin. I would never have driven out to LBJ's childhood home, seen the homestead where his grandfather settled and his grandmother hid under the house during a Comanche raid. Jose, the guide, was excellent. He's from Jose and only works on the weekends, and I will recommend his tour to everyone I know who visits Austin. Jose knows so much and was flexible with our small group of 4 in terms of what we wanted to see. He showed us everything at LBJ's Texas White House, the tombstones in the Johnson family cemetery, the runway for the "Air Force one half." I took an Austin tour a few days earlier where the guide was basically just a driver. Jose was knowledgeable. He knew the good bakery in Fredericksburg, where to go for a local beer, for lunch. He knew Park Ranger Joe Owen, the excellent guide at Johnson's boyhood home. And just because the ranch house itself is closed, it didn't matter. The tour of the tremendous property, the one room schoolhouse that Johnson attended and signed the Education Act, was open. Jose knew when things closed and what to see to maximize the tour. A wonderful time in Austin. I didn't go for the mescal or the bar scene but for the history and this tour delivered. Thank you to Jose and to Gray Line.
