Gray Line Fujairah Insider Tips

Things to do in Fujairah
1. Admire the Al Bidyah Mosque

Near the town of Bidyah in Fujairah, the Al Bidyah Mosque is one of the oldest of its kind in the UAE. Believed to have been built in the 15th century, the mosque reflects traditional Islamic architectural styles prevalent in the region during this historical period. The structure has been a central part of community life in Fujairah for hundreds of years and represents deep-rooted cultural ties to Islam. With four domes and a simple unadorned aesthetic, the Al Bidyah Mosque is definitely less showy than its more modern and larger contemporaries. However, the elegant simplicity of the mosque’s design amplifies the beauty of the local stone used in its construction. Actively in use today, the Al Bidyah Mosque is a great landmark from which to appreciate Fujairah’s natural and cultural beauty.

2. Step Into the Past at Fujairah Fort

Believed to have been built in the late 16th century, Fujairah Fort was designed as\ protection against invasions and coastal pirate attacks. It is widely considered one of the oldest forts in the UAE. Made of traditional Emirati architecture with robust stone walls, circular watchtowers, and a central courtyard, the fort represents military strategic thinking of the time. Over the years, the structure has undergone several renovations, especially in the 1990s, intended to shore up its integrity and preserve its historical heritage. Fujairah Fort is backlit against the Hajar Mountains, which offers a beautiful experience for visitors taking a tour of the fortress.

3. Relax in Luxury on Al Aqah Beach

Nestled against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains sits Al Aqah Beach, a sandy shore kissed by clear blue waters. The beach is known as relatively calm, which makes it a great location for families and groups to spend some time. Bordered by several luxury resorts like the Sandy Beach Hotel and Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, visitors that would like a seaside stay can conveniently access restaurants, spas, and restrooms in one nearby spot. Check out some of the local wildlife when you plan a snorkeling or boating excursion!

4. Explore Ancient Artifacts at the Fujairah Museum

Established in 1991, the Fujairah Museum opened under the direction of the government so that Fujairah would serve as the cornerstone for the preservation and promotion of the emirate’s rich history and cultural heritage. Created to showcase the ancient history of Fujairah and the wider region, the museum holds extensive collections on Islamic pottery, tools and weapons, and ancient coins within the Arabian Peninsula. Several goods found in burial sites — including jewelry, pottery, and personal belongings — illustrate ancient customs and beliefs about the afterlife from civilizations in the area over millennia. Displays focused on fishing and boat-making are particularly interesting in the coastal-aligned city.

5. Discover the Natural & Cultural Mysteries at Wadi Wurayah

A stunning natural valley in Fujairah, Wadi Wurayah holds immense archaeological and natural importance for the UAE and the history of human civilization as a whole. Shaped by tectonic forces for millions of years, Wadi Wurayah formed due to heavy seasonal rainfall that flooded the valleys until a lush depression formed. Visitors can admire the diverse animal and plant life that call the wadi home while also observing first-hand some archaeological sites in the area. The presence of stone tools, pottery shards, and flint indicate ancient human habitation while evidence of complex water management systems demonstrate how early settlements adapted to the environment.

6. Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque

The largest mosque in Fujairah, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque exhibits traditional Islamic architecture with a blend of modern influences. Commissioned by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan — the first president of the UAE — the mosque’s construction was intended to enhance the cultural landscape of the region. Finished in 2010, the building is one of the largest mosques in the nation with a capacity of approximately 28,000 worshippers at a time. With four beautiful minarets that rise to 197 feet a piece and a total of 11 domes, the mosque is a masterpiece of Mughal, Moorish, and other Islamic architectural traditions.

7. Browse & Haggle at the Friday Market (Souq Al Juma)

Situated along the Fujairah-Khor Fakkan Road, Fujairah’s Friday Market (Souq Al Juma) is an easily accessible space that attracts large crowds for its weekly trade event. A reflection of traditional Emirati culture, the market offers a range of products for sale, including fresh fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, and textiles. Haggling is seen as a common — and expected — practice, which makes the market a highly interactive and lively way to spend a Friday. A social and commercial hub for Fujairah for decades, the market also coincides with the local Muslim population’s prayer day, which gives visitors insight into multiple cultural practices common within the region.

8. Plan an Adventure on Snoopy Island

Located off the coast of Fujairah, Snoopy Island is named after the famous Charles M. Schulz “Peanuts” character of the same name since the island’s outline resembles a dog lying on its back and staring up at the sky. Snoopy Island is renowned for its excellent snorkeling spots and introduces visitors to an array of coral reefs and diverse marine life. Scuba divers are also a frequent sight off the island’s shores, and notable marine species like clownfish, parrotfish, and sea turtles make regular appearances for adventurers. Plan an excursion to Snoopy Island and get ready for a beach day you’ll never forget!

9. Go for a Hike in the Hajar Mountains

A dramatic backdrop to nearly every activity in Fujairah, the Hajar Mountains stretch across the eastern part of the UAE and extend from the Musandam Peninsula to the northern region of Oman. The highest peak in the range is Jebel Jais, a stunning 6,348 foot-behemoth composed of sedimentary limestone and sandstone. The Hajar Mountains are a well-known location for biodiverse ecosystems, including various endemic plant species and animals that thrive in the arid conditions of the region. With numerous hiking trails accessible from Fujairah, the mountains provide a great opportunity to get outdoors and experience firsthand the landscapes home to local Bedouin tribes and ancient settlements. The protected Wadi Al Wurayah area can be found within the Hajar Mountains as well.

10. Sample Local Cuisine

With a prime coastal location, Fujairah has access to premium fresh seafood, which quite frequently shows up in local dishes. Along with fish, visitors can expect meals that include rice, lamb, and a variety of spices like saffron and cardamom. One of the region’s most famous dishes is Al Majboos, a spiced rice recipe often cooked with chicken, lamb, or seafood. Similarly, Mandi is made of fragrant basmati rice and meat — typically chicken or lamb — and spices. For breakfast, visitors can order knafeh, a pastry made with thin noodle-like strands and sweetened cheese. To top off your meal, finish with a cup of Arabic coffee flavored with cardamom (also called ghawa).
